Where the money goes

  • Basic services fee, the funeral director’s non-declinable overhead charge.
  • Transfer & preparation, moving the deceased, and embalming (rarely legally required).
  • Casket, frequently the largest and most marked-up item.
  • Facilities & staff, viewing room, ceremony space, and hearse.
  • Cemetery costs, plot, opening/closing, vault, and headstone, billed separately.
Your rights save you money. Under the FTC’s Funeral Rule, every funeral home must give you an itemized price list, let you buy only what you want, and accept a casket you bought elsewhere with no handling fee.
