Federal law (the FTC Funeral Rule) requires every funeral home to give you a written, itemized General Price List, or GPL, as soon as you ask about arrangements or pricing. You are entitled to keep it, and to receive prices over the phone as well.
The GPL breaks out each charge separately, basic services, transfer of remains, embalming, viewing, the ceremony, caskets, and more, so you can compare homes line by line and decline items you don’t want. You are never required to buy a package when individual items would cost less.
Ask two or three funeral homes for their GPLs and compare them side by side. Because prices for the same services often differ by thousands of dollars, this single step is one of the most effective ways to protect your family financially.
Caskets
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home must accept a casket you buy elsewhere and cannot charge a handling fee. Comparing casket sellers can meaningfully lower the total.
